Directed by esteemed educator and performer, Eddie Mendenhall, the Kuumbwa Jazz Honor Band is comprised of gifted high school jazz musicians from Santa Cruz, Los Gatos and Carmel areas. This ensemble has appeared at Monterey’s annual Whalefest, Next Generation Jazz Festival and San Jose Winter Jazz Festival, has opened for Jazz at Lincoln Center at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium and presented a collaborative piece with the Santa Cruz Ballet Theatre on the Crocker Stage at Cabrillo College. Ensemble members enjoy regular workshops, master classes and mentoring sessions with leading artists, such as Kenny Werner and Pascal LeBoeuf. The Honor Band is co-directed by tenor saxophonist and educator, Dillon Baiocchi, a Santa Cruz native and honor band alum who is giving back to continually uphold the jazz legacy in this area. The audition-based jazz band challenges students to gain a mastery of improvisation and performance. Come down and hear these talented young musicians perform their grand finale concert on the Kuumbwa stage on Wednesday, May 28th. This will be a concert you won’t want to miss!
